Essential oils come in handy during the summer. Not only will they boost your spirits, they will keep you comfortable no matter what your schedule holds. Keep reading to discover my 5 summer essential oil tips.
1. Soothe a Sunburn
Even if you remember your hat, sunscreen, and a beach umbrella, odds are you will get at least a spot of sunburn this summer. Don’t let it ruin your vacation! Keep an aloe plant in your garden or kitchen. Fill your palm with fresh aloe and add a drop or two of oil of lavender and smooth over burnt areas. You’ll feel instant cooling relief.
If you are traveling, pick up a small (3 oz or less if you’re flying) spray bottle. Fill with grapeseed oil and 2 drops of lavender essential oil. Spray on sunburn as needed. For extra relief, keep it in your hotel mini-fridge.
2. Keep Your Cool
If you find yourself getting grumpy in the kitchen when preparing summertime meals, keep a cool solution in your fridge (out of kid’s reach). Fill a small spray bottle with grapeseed or sunflower oil (both are light and non-greasy) and add 1 drop peppermint oil (for a blend add two drops of your favorite citrus essential oils like lemon or sweet orange). The peppermint will boost your spirits and cool you off at the same time.
On super hot nights, cool yourself down by rubbing 1-2 drops peppermint essential oil into the sole of each foot. You should feel instant relief.
3. Show Some Skin
Make a citrus body scrub that will have your skin glowing all summer long.
- 1/2 cup sea or kosher salt
- Juice from one lemon
- 10 drops of lemon (or other citrus) essential oil
- 1/4 cup sunflower oil
Mix all ingredients in a small mixing bowl and scoop into a small mason jar. Use 1-2 times per week – especially on elbows, knees, and ankles. Do not use on newly shaved or waxed legs! The salt will sting. Use within 4 weeks or toss it and make a new batch.
4. Banish Bugs
Skip the chemical commercial bug sprays this summer and create your own unique blend. Add 3-4 oz of your favorite carrier oil (jojoba and almond are my favs) to a small spray bottle. Experiment with any combination of the following essential oils, all are proven insect repellants: sweet basil, citronella, rosemary,cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, and lavender. Add a total of three drops to the oil, shake and spray.
Note: This formula is safe for children and dogs. Do not use around cats or birds.
5. Skip the BenGay
Oh sure, the rock climbing lessons seemed like a fun idea . Sadly, you are too sore to do anything when you wake up the next day. Make a muscle rub to soothe the summer weekend warrior in your family.
- 4 drops rosemary essential oil
- 2 drops lavender essential oil
- 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 15 ml grapeseed oil
Massage into whatever hurts. You’ll smell fresh and will be able to lift your arms high enough to wash your hair. Keep in the fridge to make it last.
